uPVC Windows and Composite Doors

uPVC windows and composite doors are highly popular, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance options for UK homes. They share similar benefits but differ significantly in their materials, construction, and overall cost.

Understanding uPVC Windows

What it is: uPVC stands for Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride. It is a rigid, durable form of plastic that won’t rot, rust, or warp like traditional wood.

Construction: The frame consists of multiple hollow chambers that trap air, providing excellent thermal insulation. Inside the uPVC plastic, there is typically a galvanised steel core to provide structural strength.

Benefits: They are highly affordable, very easy to clean, and require almost no maintenance other than a wipe-down.

Aesthetics: While traditionally known for standard white frames, modern uPVC windows come in a wide variety of colours and woodgrain finishes.

Understanding Composite Doors

What it is: Composite doors are modern front or back doors designed to eliminate the common flaws of traditional timber and basic plastic doors.

Construction: Instead of being made of one single material, they combine a mixture of materials (including a solid timber core, insulating polyurethane foam, and uPVC) all pressed together under high pressure. This is then wrapped in a tough, weather-resistant outer skin, usually made of Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP).

Benefits: Composite doors are thicker (usually 44mm) than standard uPVC doors (28mm). This extra bulk, combined with their dense core, makes them incredibly secure, highly thermally efficient, and resistant to scratching or fading.

Aesthetics: They are designed to closely mimic the look, feel, and weight of a traditional wooden door while maintaining the easy-care benefits of modern materials.
